A really want to be a floral designer..how do I get started?

As you've already read I really want to be a floral designer but I don't know how to get started, how much they make, nothing. Please help, if you have any information about the field please let me know. Thanks

A really want to be a floral designer..how do I get started?
Are you still in school? Then I would suggest, becoming and intern at a floral shop.

If you are looking to start your own business, my suggestion would be to find a local floral shop owner and conduct an informational interview. DO NOT ASK FOR A JOB AT THIS TIME. Right now you are just looking for information.

Ask ??? such as: How long has (the owner) been in the business? At what level did they start? Are there any trade publications/organizations available?, etc.

My only other suggestion would be look up information online regarding the floral business, as well as, business-ownership period. Also, try designing for family and friend functions (baby and bridal showers, graduations, weddings) and see what they may say regarding your "passion".

Best Wishes!

I have a floral arrangement that needs to secured better in the copper container it is in.....Suggestions?

You could use some floral foam and then you push the stems into it and it will hold the flowers in place better.

I have a floral arrangement that needs to secured better in the copper container it is in.....Suggestions?
Floral Foam :)

It is a wonderful thing. :)

Soak the foam through and through before inserting stems and use the wire anchors to help maximize stability.

If they are faux flowers use a styrofoam ball with wire anchors. You can find both at a local hobby store.
Reply:Caulk the arrangement in place

What is the best smelling floral perfume?

Gucci's Envy Me. Smells heavenly....cute bottle too!

What is the best smelling floral perfume?
I like Calvin Klein Euphoria...
Reply:bath and body works has a wide selection floral scented perfumes - i believe they all smell terrific, and there's not too expensive.
Reply:Paris Hilton!
Reply:There are a few, from which you can choose, since this is a personal preference - rosewater, lavender water, orangeflower water, - they are usually natural and don't smell like chemicals! It's possible to make your own but you need a lot of flowers and to leave them infused in a mixture of alcohol and water for a long time.

If I add more acrylic water to a floral arrangement, after it hardens, will it mess it up or look funny?

Well, it doesn't exactly look funny, but what happens is that a line develops between the original application of the acrylic water and the addition you put on top of it. It also depends on the time frame between the first pouring and the second. The longer the time between pourings, the more noticeable the line becomes. If it has been a while, be sure to suck out any dust that accumulates on the first layer because I didn't and that was really noticeable. If you want to add more and don't like the line, you can add a ribbon, gimp, and/or a row of ribbon roses, glued to the vase on the outside to hide the problem. That is what I did and you cannot tell where the differential line is now.

How much are you supposed to tip a floral delivery agent? What if you don't even want the flowers?

I recently had this happen to me. I was being stalked and I did not want to accept flowers from some creepy weirdo. But I appreciate customer service and I did not think it was fair for the delivery guy not to be tipped.. and yet I wasn't sure whether to tip at all? Help..

How much are you supposed to tip a floral delivery agent? What if you don't even want the flowers?
Since you did not request the service, you are not required to tip. The actual patron tips. And it is perfectly acceptable to refuse delivery of the flowers, it will hopefully get the message across a lot quicker.
Reply:you tip 10% and ask him to return them as refused. think of the 10% as a message service
Reply:I would think in this situation, a tip would not be expected. If it is a service you had specifically asked for, then a tip may be appropriate. Since you were not the one ordering the flowers any tip should be the responsibility of the ordering party.

Just FYI- I've never tipped a flower delivery person, UPS driver, etc.
Reply:giving a tip is your choice...

they are paid to deliver flowers anyways...
Reply:Good services today are very much taken for granted. Tipping the flower guy is alright. $1 or 2 Dollars is fair and not enough people do it. I also tip my grocery bagger and anyone else that provides excellent service for me. Service jobs in general get paid miserable but they are SO important to have.

I give my mailman $10 for xmas

I allways prefer giving someone in the service industry before handing it to some bum on the street

Where can I go to get vintage floral printed wallpaper?

Second Hand Rose, in NYC is second to none, they have AMAZING prints.

Does anyone know of a floral design class in Southern California?

call your local school board to see if they offer classes or maybe your local committee center...

Does anyone know of a floral design class in Southern California?
Many times Vo-Tech schools or community colleges will offer floral design classes. Also, contact some of the local florists. I took a class from a wonderful florist who had her own shop and taught a class or two each year. It has come in handy. Now I always have something to fall back on if I can't get a job.

I really need some ideas for NON-floral wedding centerpieces?

My wedding colors are a copper and orange so if you have any ideas i would appreciate it!

Also A LOT of people give the gold fish idea, i think it's cute but little kids are going to be there and i know it'll get messy!

I really need some ideas for NON-floral wedding centerpieces?
Try putting a bowl in the center of each table and put floating candles in it.You don't have to light them since there will be kids around. It would be cute %26amp; different.
Reply:Candles are nice, buy may not be a good idea with little kids.

You could use the favors as a centerpiece:

You could use plants:

You could use fruit

Good Luck

This but orange (and maybe not as much color)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/domeafavor/...

you could do something like this and add more orange berries

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeansw/3093...

You could also get vases and fill them with orange items or pussywillows or branches and use orange candles. You could get white candles and tie or glue different orange ribbon to them.
Reply:Instead of a floral centerpiece you could put a small cake on each table. Then you wouldn't have to get a large cake either. The cake should be large enough to serve as many people as there are at each table and then you could sprinkle flowers and have candles around the cake on the table.

My cousin did small pumpkins that were sprayed with glitter, they looked really cool and were really unusual.
Reply:Fruit

Oranges, pumpkins, peaches maybe carrots?

Some autumn leaves like the first person suggested

Anything that fits in with those colours
Reply:oranges in a hurricane vase! I always suggest using fruit because it is cheap. Use a copper colored table runner or squares underneath the vase. Those are very pretty colors together by the way!
Reply:You can maybe do this with oranges and instead of the flowers maybe use candles.

Reply:Pumpkin, scattered silk fall leaves
Reply:I bought gold plates at Old Time Pottery for $1 each (called chargers) places a small candle holder in the middle with candles in them. Around the candle holder put fall colored vines that you also get at a craft store. I then put a camera at each table for my guests to take pics with. It was very inexpensive and I got sooo many compliments that people have ask to borrow my stuff.

Reply:i really like the lacoste perfume, and the white diamod perfume, They smell really nice. you should try it
Reply:Oh this is so difficult. They are so many good ones that i just can't make up my mind. I've always love Paris by YSL for its lovely rose scent. Annick Goutal Petite Cherie is also wonderful. Victoria Secret carries some very nice floral perfume but it doesn't last long. Its best used when you want to have an intimate night or date. Its also nice to spray it all over your bed and pillows. You wake up with nice smelling hair too. The choices are just too many. It also depends on your budget. But please do keep this in mind, if someone is wearing something that you like it does not mean it will smell exactly when applied on yourself cos of our own body chemistry. So take a walk around the mall. Spray some on your wrist but don't buy immediately, just walk or shop for about half and hour and smell your wrist again. Thats the smell that you are going to end up with. But don't test too many on one day. You sense of smell will go haywired. Once your body heat react with the perfume (that why gave it a good half hour) you'll know if its the best smelling floral perfume for you. Frankly, I've so many 'best' smelling floral perfume and usually have around four or five different smell on my dressing table. I'll pick according to the mood i'm in at that time. I feel down, I pick one that would pick me up. When I feel sexy, i'll have another etc etc. Good luck on picking the perfume and i bet you would end up buying a few bottles cos they are all divine. The thing i love most about perfume, certain smell bring back childhood memory, others, your first date or first kiss or your first love. Anyway, i hope you'll find the perfect floral perfume.
Reply:Rock'n Rose by Valentino.

Princess by Vera Wang.

Happy Heart by Clinique.

If you have time go to Sephora in the mall and just smell the perfumes, there are so many to choose from. But remember, what someone likes on themselves doesn't smell the same on you. That's why you should try them for youself.

Do black shoes go with a navy-floral dress?

I need to know for my grandparent's 50th anniversary party tommorow. The shoes are plain black ballet flats.

Do black shoes go with a navy-floral dress?
No. I would definitely stay away from navy and black, that is dangerous territory. I would think dark brown, light brown, or cream, even red before black.

Good Luck

Akilah
Reply:black would be ok, but if the floral dress doesnt have black in it, go with navy. If the dress is all navy, try white, it would look better :) have fun!
Reply:not really.

you can get away with it if the dress is above the knee.
Reply:Black would go, but white would look better. Try a cute, spunk white heel with a heel that falls and higher in the back.
Reply:normally flats would work, but unless the dress has black in it navy and black clash

What is wet oasis as pertaining to floral arrangements?

Oasis is a special foam used for FRESH floral arrangements. You get it at craft and floral stores. It needs to be soaked in water, to absorb the water, then placed in the bottom of the container the arrangement will be in. It holds the flowers where and how you wnat them and waters the flowers. You add more water to keep the arangement lasting longer.

Sahara is another foam, similar to Oasis, but used for dried and silk floral arrangements. Some people use Styrofaom for silk arrangements as well.

What is wet oasis as pertaining to floral arrangements?
It is usually a green foam that you can get at Michaels or Walmart. You soak it in water then place it in your container. then place your cut flowers in an arranged fashion.

How do florists come up with the prices they charge for silk floral arrangements?

The same way anyone else does: cost of materials, time to create the arrangement plus overhead (wages, insurance, utilities, taxes, capital expenses, etc.) plus perhaps a premium for the "intellectual" property that goes into creating an artistic item.

Most florists will use a higher quality of silk floral pieces for their arrangements than you buy at the typical dollar store. They are also using newer, perhaps something trendier items than the ones you see at the local dollar store.

How do florists come up with the prices they charge for silk floral arrangements?
by trying to butt ra** people...they are way to expensive for something than can easily be done yourself
Reply:The general rule is to figure cost of materials and times by 3,however, when it comes to charging for one's creativity, the artist is free to charge what he likes.

Submerged floral centerpieces-How long can flowers last underwater?

I am wanting to make my own wedding reception centerpieces. The flowers would be a mixture of mini orange callas.. cymbidium orchids and alostromerias- I would like to make them 1-2 days in advance and may change the flowers included if they aren't the best for the job!

Submerged floral centerpieces-How long can flowers last underwater?
The alstromerias should be fine. I'm not too sure about the callas.

White orchids will turn clear if they are in too much water and kind of look like lettuce that has been kept in the fridge too long.

Roses work really well, though - I know that wasn't one of your choices.

I love those kind of arrangements, even if they are a little high maintenance- I think they are beautiful.
Reply:i saw a fabulous picture where they put waterproof lights in the bottom of the vase and lamp shade on the top and it looked awesome. they had 2 submerged calla lillies in each vase. one up the right way and one upside down and their stems were curled around (maybe wired).

if you wanted to do them early you could use artificial flowers. nobody will know as they can't touch them anyway
Reply:Think about silk flowers
Reply:Those are really hot right now, infact I just suggested them to someone on Answers. Do not make them a few days in advace. They need to be made the day of the wedding. Callas are stunning submerged as are orchids. Cymbidium orchids hold up better than Dendrobium ones do. Roses also look great, and so does Hypernicum, and Lilly Grass. I dont know how many you have to do, but if you do them the same day they will look great!

Do you think Dandelions would make a nice floral arrangement?

Do you think Dandelions would make a nice floral arrangement?
hmmmmm......

instead of a "dandy" lion I'm thinking you should go with a "stellar" snapdragon.
Reply:Well Dandelions and a few more colors added in.

Add some Babies Breath to make the colors really stand out.
Reply:Dandelions are pretty, but they wilt pretty fast.
Reply:They could
Reply:Yes, they would look great, if you can figure out a way to keep them from wilting.
Reply:they're ok.....i would prefer lavenders and jasmines....they're pretty and have a sweet, spicy fragrance
Reply:Dandelions are lovely. When they wilt, you can just pick more.
Reply:yeah they would make one for me ok
Reply:I do.. I think they are beautiful.
Reply:well dandelions are pretty cheap, but u could add them to roses or something and it may look good.
Reply:it would take an awful "non-picky" recipient not to throw them in your face.
Reply:They make an even better salad. Strangely enough, young dandelion leaves have a mild delicate flavor and can be used in salads. My grandfather used to make dandelion wine. That must have taken a lot of patience and dandelions. As for a floral arrangement, I think it would be a little monochromatic.
Reply:Yes I love dandelions.Just make sure you immerse them in water as your cutting them to keep them fresh and to get rid of any little bugs that might be on them.
Reply:Unfortunately, once they are picked, they die very quickly!
Reply:Sure. And with having so many you will be able to make up several.
Reply:It's the thought that counts. I'd be excited to get them.
Reply:yes, and you can use the leaves for a dandelion salad. Did you know that?
Reply:Find some little purple flowers to contrast with the yellow and put them in a pretty vase.
Reply:no way! they are weeds for crying out loud. What is wrong with you girls?
Reply:I love dandelions, but the don't vase up well. Or at least not that I've seen.

You could always use the greens in salads.
Reply:During the turn of the century dandelions and clover were often used in wedding bouquets....
Reply:when I was a little girl I used to pick wildflowers and give them to my neighbors.

A lady on my street had beautiful gardens, and one day I picked a bouquet of dandelions for her. My mother asked me what I was doing and I told her my plans.

She told me that dandelions are weeds and made me toss them.

That day I decided that dandelions, though technically weeds, were still attractive in a bouquet.

I also decided not to live my life in fear of criticism by the experts (be it gardening or whatever), because if the experts say that dandelions are weeds, then they don't have the common sense of a child!
Reply:For only a few minutes, then they keel over.
Reply:no get roses or orchids. every women loves orchids especially purple.
Reply:make sure that if you are going to give them to anybody, that they aren't allergic to them. They have a high count of pollen. I know some who goes crazy just being around them !!
Reply:I actually love dandelions - especially this time of year when its one of the first things that's green and flowering! I say go for it - but they do wilt fast :-(
Reply:Yes and if I remember a festival in Dover OH. Is held yearly. They are editable if Iam not mistaken. But please look it up to make sure.
Reply:'pends
Reply:yes, but you can't keep a dandelion from wilting.I remember trying everything when I was little.
Reply:its the thought that count and if a person really likes u they should accept it because it's the love and the thought that counts
Reply:no but a fine wine

Can paint cover floral-print wall paper?

My bathroom has this very vibrant floral pattern from the 60's, and I'd like to repaint before my appraisal. Problem is, the house was built in 1880 and has plaster walls. When we took down the paper in other rooms the results were horrible. Can anyone suggest a type of paint that would cover a rainbow of colors?

Can paint cover floral-print wall paper?
Kem Primer, sherwin williams, a fast flashing primer, Air dries real quick, maybe the paper will not loosen before it flashes. Smile
Reply:go to the paint store and get the paint that will seal the wall paper. then you can paint it the color you went.
Reply:Please, please please don't paint over the wallpaper! As somone who just bought a c. 1900 house with painted-over wallpaper, I'd like to slap the previous owner. It makes it much more difficult for future owners to remove, and the texture of the wallpaper showed through the paint.

Removing wallpaper from plaster is not easy. Unlike drywall, it works better if you dry scrape it. It is a lengthy process, as you probably know. There are things you can apply to the wall to the paper residue to remove it (are your walls brown where the paper came off in the other rooms?) - that may be the step you missed the first time around. Go here and you'll find tons of resources for removing old wallpaper paste.

Don't take a shortcut. You'll get more money for your house if you do it right.

Can floral shop hydrangeas be planted outside?

Yes! They are just rooted ends from a regular Hydrangea bush. Wait until spring in your area after danger of frost has passed and plant in a shady moist spot in the garden. The plant has been grown in a greenhouse and indoors up until now, so it would be quite a shock to get put out in the cold.

To help it survive as a houseplant, be sure it stays moist and excess water is able to drain away from the plant. Those decorative plastic liners that wrap most nursery pots are great for dressing it up, but not so good for the plant as the roots tend to get pretty soggy in there which can cause rot.

Once it is in the garden, you can change the colors of the flowers from year to year by adjusting the pH of the soil . Acid soil causes blue flowers, and alkalai soil makes pink flowers. Most soil is on the acid side of the scale. Here the Pacific Northwest most hydrangeas are a deep blue thanks to all the rain. I lime a few of mine every year for a little variety of pink.

Good luck!

Can floral shop hydrangeas be planted outside?
I have given it a try with not great success. Often, shop hydrangeas haven't been exposed to temperature variations so you have to exose them gradually. Also, they don't have extensive root systems so it may take them a while to get fully established. Good luck.
Reply:depending on what the variety is and where you live... if you can tell me what the variety is and where you live, I can give you a definite answer

Does floral arrangements school exits?
Many Adult night courses run floral courses. I was thinking of taking one just to know how to do it. ICS runs one in Canada that you can do at home. If you can't find one being offered in your home town this could be the answer a long-distance education course.
Reply:how about a school where they teach grammar and spelling?
Reply:Check out your local comunity colege. They will have information on this. If they do not offer the classes they will tell you who would in that area.
Reply:Yes they do exist, some colleges will arrange them thru local florist. However allot of it is natural ability, and having a good eye for floral arrangements, allot of people just pick it up on their own, get some silk flowers and mess around with them.

I attended a class thru ITT at a local florist years ago but a good eye and natural ability is better than any class, as well as the right supplies. Don't be afraid to try it on your own.

Does anyone know of a good name for a floral shop?

I need some ideas...

Does anyone know of a good name for a floral shop?
just think of what the shop will be, not just another flower shop, are u going to specialize in something in particular? like modern designs, country, romantic, trendy, etc???? or what type of clients are u going to have?? where the shop is going to be located? what other flower shops are in the area??

your question might sound silly to a lot of people, but it really is a difficult one and you should think about it, also,, pick a name that will let people know what you shop is about and what it sells or services it offers, like are u going to just sell flowers or bridal services, catering??

I know what it feels like when it comes to choosing a name, I have a flower shop, in an trendy, chic part of town, it took me like 6 months to decide on what name, finally i came up with Fleur D'Or, which is french for gilded flower, i choose that name because part of the interior design of the shop would be in the french style and most of our designs are traditional and french designs

for more info on how to pick a name, you could read more on the small business administration website, i believe theres some info on that

best of luck!!!!!

Where can I find floral industry market research and demographics?
These are wholesale numbers, so I don't think their exactly what you are looking for.

Flowers

$422 million

The combined wholesale value of domestically produced cut flowers in 2004 for all flower-producing businesses in 36 states with $100,000 or more in sales. Among states, California was the leading producer, alone accounting for nearly three-quarters of this amount ($304 million). %26lt;%26gt;http://www.nass.usda.gov%26gt;

$43 million

The combined wholesale value of domestically produced cut roses in 2004 for all businesses in 36 states with $100,000 or more in sales. Among all types of cut flowers, roses were second in receipts to lilies ($78 million). %26lt;%26gt;http://www.nass.usda.gov%26gt;

22,022

The number of florists nationwide in 2003. These businesses employed 113,270 people. %26lt;%26gt;http://www.census.gov/prod/www/abs/cbpto...

Trade associations often keep market statistics, or may be able to point you in the right direction. For specific information about Wisconsin, I'd try this association:

Wisconsin

Wisconsin Florists Association

P. O. Box 493

Menomonee Falls, WI 53052

Specific demographic information for the state of Wisconsin down to the county, or even city level can be found at the census website.

I would like to know how to preserve a bird nest. Would a dried flower floral preservative work?

You might ask at a craft store like Michael's. However, I'd think twice before bringing in or even touching a real bird's nest. Too many diseases and germs.

I would like to know how to preserve a bird nest. Would a dried flower floral preservative work?
HAIR SPRAY...it's worked for years! If there are germs, they will be stuck forever!
Reply:If you are talking about that spray.. Yes, that is the best thing to use for such preservation.. I have used it on other items but not birds nest

Do you have to take a floral design class if you do floral designing from home?

not necessarily, but, you better be good at your game ! If you have a natural talent, sometimes, that's better than all the classes ! (classes would be a good idea though, to keep you on top )

Do you have to take a floral design class if you do floral designing from home?
I dont know about where you live, but the bookstore where I am has some great great great books on the subject - so I'm guessing your library might. If not, just browse the bookstore a few afternoons and consider it your lesson time ;)

Look at floral designs you see in magazines like House and Garden, Architextural digest, Martha Stewart, etc. They have great ideas toooo

Never be afraid to mix unexpected things.

Good Luck
Reply:You don't have to take a class, you can be creative with your own flowers. Also if you buy flowers at the store or plastic flowers along with a nice vase, you could do a beautiful design with it being creative.
Reply:If you want to do this from home, you must have a natural talent for it...no? I don't know where you live, but I'm sure that you don't need any special training to be a creative floral designer. I would look around at floral arrangements that are displayed on tables at weddings or browse through a floral shop or even look at the silk floral arrangements you see in arts and crafts shops like Michael's or the Rag Shop. Just pick up ideas and then apply them to your own work. You will do just fine. Good luck with your floral design business.

What is the average cost per floral item for a wedding?

Please list cost for:

-bridal bouquet

-bridesmaid bouquet

-boutonniere

-corsage

-toss bouquet

What is the average cost per floral item for a wedding?
when I had mine done which was 2 years ago it cost me:

bridal: $150

bridesmaid: $95

boutonniere: $8

corsage: $15

as for a toss bouquet...I tossed my actual flowers so I didnt have this....and my flowers were orchids and lillies and roses...the bridesmaids were just roses and other little flowers and the guys had roses.

I could have however ordered the package that had bride bouguet...3 bridesmaid bouquets, flower girl basket, 6 boutinnieres, 4 corsages and a big centerpiece for like $550...but I didnt need all that.
Reply:It depends on if you're getting silk or fresh, having them made or making them yourself, AND what kind of flowers you want....My maid of honor and I are pretty crafty and we're making all of them ourselves, using silk 'blooms' that look exactly like the real thing. Five bridesmaids and groomsmen plus the bride and groom, all for under $120.
Reply:I chose the cheaper prices.

It all depended on which flowers I wanted.

Shop around.

bridal bouquet: $95 - $125

corsage/Boutonniere: $7 - $11
Reply:I am having my floral items made by the florist in the grocery store sounds cheesy but she does a great job. My sister had her flowers done there. And they were beautiful. So don't chuck that as an option.

roses cost 12.99 a dozen

boutonnieres cost 6.99 each

corsages (wrist) 6.99 (pin on) 9.99

My bouquets and my corsages are going to be made of pink and cream roses with cream freesia
Reply:It really depends on your area of the country, and what type of flowers you choose. But, the averages are these:

Bridal Bouquet: $100-175

B'maids' Bouquets: $45-75 each

Bouts: $8-10 each

Corsages: $10-15 each

Toss Bouquet: $35-50 (but most of my florists throw them in free).

Ask if anything is free like that when you meet with one. Some throw in cake flowers too for free if you don't need a ton; they just give you the leftovers from your other flowers.

You didn't ask about centerpieces, but they are varied a lot in price from $15-200 each depending on size and style.

If you have any specific questions about this, e-mail me!

Does any one have any ideas for non-floral wedding centerpieces?

I am getting married 09/06/08 and my colors are hot pink, black, and white. I am trying to stay away from floral centerpieces at the reception, but I have no idea what to do!! The table cloths are going to be black and I would like to use the hot pink as an accent...but I need help. Any ideas please??

Does any one have any ideas for non-floral wedding centerpieces?
We used large glass bowls (like rimless fish bowls), added colored stones in the colors of our wedding to the bottom, filled them with water, and added scented floating candles. They were gorgeous, and affordable.
Reply:A think a great idea is to use framed pictures of you and your spouse with backs facing each other. Candles next to them add a romantic touch. Something like this:

http://www.something-special.net/Picture...

You should easily be able to find black picture frames pretty cheap and you can attach them together using swing brackets or even taping them together. It looks like this person used matting frames.
Reply:i love the m%26amp;m's in the vase idea also if you didn't want to use m%26amp;m's they have those colored balls you could fill the vases with. another idea i love is getting some fish bowls and getting bright colord beta fish to put in them...only problem with that is what happens to the fish after. if you have kids comming maybe talk to parents before and see if they would like to take them home {find homes for them before hand}.

i personally love non floral centerpieces...and they are cheaper!

GOOD LUCK! :-)
Reply:Use mirror fragments, glass beads/pebbles (used to fill floral vases), confetti, etc. around the table. Candles are always nice (just don't used scented candles because the smell will take away from the flavor of the food), but ask the venue if you are allowed to use candles, and make sure you have something to protect the table cloths from the dripping wax.
Reply:You could buy some tall drinking glasses or vases and fill them with white beads or fake white pearls and put a hot pink flower or floating candle on top. Or, group a couple of small vases together and wrap them with strands of fake pearls. Put water in and a few drops of food coloring to make the water pink and add a hot pink floating candle.

this is what we were going to do, get a fishbowl kinda thing with black/hot pink rocks with flating candles.
Reply:A round mirror purchased from a craft store with pink candles in glass votives. Sprinkle some flowers petals around it and you have a very elegant centerpiece.
Reply:I say do three vases at different heights on a mirror add water with hot pink rose petals and a floating candle on top. These centerpieces look awesome.
Reply:fill a glass bowl with black and hot pink stones, fill the rest of the way with water, and floating votives on the top.
Reply:I would do a clear cylinder tall vase with like peppers or limes in it... depends on the wedding colors these days those are very popular!
Reply:Fill a Large Vase or Jar with hot pink M%26amp;M's or Candies. Put votive candles around with some white rose petals.
Reply:A friend of mine had fish - bettas, I think. It looked really neat (the guests took them home at the end of the night).

I have seen a multi floral white shrub I would love to know the name of?

its in flower now, has arched stems with hundreds of little white flowers all the way up it, it has tiny little dark green leaves behind the flowers, a bit like stars, no smell, just beautiful to look at, its quite a tall large shrub, abou 6ft high, and wide, thanks for looking.

I have seen a multi floral white shrub I would love to know the name of?
is it pyracanthus (sp)
Reply:Possibly Spiraea nipponica "Snowmound" if it has no scent.

Most of the white flowered summer shrubs are scented (to attract pollinators)

The pyracanthas have finished flowering in the Midlands - mostly looking pretty "dead" now before the berries form.

Osteomeles is an arching shrub with five-petalled flowers but these come in clusters.

Styrax has lots of yellow-centred white flowers in early summer.
Reply:It is most likely one of the Philadelphus', as they are currently in flower. There are a few varieties, but all have white flowers and a strong perfume, and arching stems. They should be pruned by half immediately after flowering, then the growth it puts on will provide the flowering stems for next year.

my best guess is that its some form of viburnum

How to make a floral hair wreath? Please help!?

I am making a beautiful fairy costume for my little one, and really would like to make a nice wreath for her hair as well, but am not sure what to use for the base of it...has anyone made one for a costume or wedding or anything? Can someone help me with some ideas or quick instructions? THANKS!

How to make a floral hair wreath? Please help!?
If you have any fabric left over from her dress, about 2-3 inches wide and long enough to fit around her head, you can make a matching circlet. Sew the fabric into a long tube. Turn it inside out and fill it with stuffing. Sew extra long ribbons onto the ends of the tube and tie the ends together to form a circlet to fit her head comfortably. Allow the ribbons to hang down the backside. Wrap ribbons, beads, costume jewelry (chains etc) or lace around the circlet to decorate it.

I've also used a grapevine wreath purchased at a craft store to make a crown. They come in all sizes so you would choose one that fits the head of your daughter.

Leave it natural or spray paint it the color you want. Weave ribbon and flowers around the crown etc.

My daughter is 14 and feels much too old to let me do something like this for her. I miss those days....thanks for letting me share ideas!
Reply:I use floral wire and shape it into a halo. Then I take silk flowers on a short stem and hold them onto the wire and wrap with floral tape. After I have secured the 1st flower, I lay the 2nd flower on top of the stem, just below the 1st flower, and wrap it onto the halo.

When you have completed the halo with the flowers, then take long curing ribbons and streamers and attach them to the halo where the flowers ended.
Reply:This site will show you how to make one.

How does someone go about obtaining a license to buy wholesale (like at a floral wholesale)?

I have a degree in floral design and I wanted to make stuff up at my home and sell it online or whatever, so I would really like to get a license to where I can buy stuff from the floral wholesale places since it would be more cost effecient...how do I go about doing this?

How does someone go about obtaining a license to buy wholesale (like at a floral wholesale)?
When I worked at a wholesale florist in Wash D.C. we didn't require a license to buy from us. Regular customers and established business were allowed to buy on credit and would get better deals when available, but other than that anyone could walk in off the street a buy in bulk if they wanted to.
Reply:Most of the "wholesale" places, like your floral places are just like a Sams Club and want to suck in some membership fees in order to shop there.

The local Flower Factory last year had a free membership there and we got in on that.

If a place requires you to work at a flower shop to have a membership just create some letterhead for your future business and you should be fine.

What kind of perfume to get for gf for xmas? Floral or oriental?

Currently debating between D%26amp;G BY (floral) or Burberry Brit (oriental). Girlfriend is early 20s, slender, hot, cheery, and Asian.

Do girls now prefer flowery fragrances or more vanilla spicy ones?

Thanks.

What kind of perfume to get for gf for xmas? Floral or oriental?
Perfume is very personal...it completely depends on your girlfriend. Is she very girly and feminine (floral)? Is she more open and sexy (spicy)? Often perfume can smell different on different people. Why don't you get her your favorite scent or a gift certificate?
Reply:get her the vinilla spicy one, sounds sexier.

I need tips on dusting artificial floral arrangements. Pretty delicate w/mix of dried and silk materials.?
your local florist should sell or be able to get silk flower cleaner. it is an aerosol can usually costs about 5.00 to 6.00 bucks. you just spray it on and it just "eats" the dust away. it really works well Report It

Can you paint over manufactured home walls? We're about to buy a used one w/ floral walls in kitchen/bath?

We're buying a 5 year old manufactured home on 8 acres, it's huge and beautiful... except the kitchen and bathroom walls.... the walls are in sections and i guess could be replaced, but if possible, I'd like to paint them, maybe the whole house, what's the best way to do this?

Can you paint over manufactured home walls? We're about to buy a used one w/ floral walls in kitchen/bath?
What material is used for the walls? In general, if the sheen of the wall is high (i.e. shiny), you will need to "knock down" the sheen. You can do this by using an abrasive, such as a light sand paper, sos pad, or dutch clensor.

Or, you can purchase "Liquid Sand Paper" or "TSP" -- Tri Sodium Phosphate to prepare the walls for paint.

Do a test with the paint on a hardly-visible portion of the wall (i.e. inside the closet) to see if the paint sticks well. If it does, you are golden. If it does not, try the suggestions above and then paint.

Regardless, always clean the surface with soap and water to get rid of all dirt and oil before painting -- the actual painting is easy -- it is the prep work before painting that is real work, but if you don't do the prep work, you will regret it.

Good luck.
Reply:Yes, they can be painted. Make sure the walls are clean before you paint.
Reply:Id try a small area with good quality wall Paint.(Benjamin Moore Aquavelvet) Let it dry for at least 4-6 hours and then see if you can scratch it off, If you cant then go ahead and Paint, if it comes off you need to prime with KILZ an oil base quick dry primer, then 2 coats of finish paint. Use throw away brushes and rollers with the kilz , and the odor is really strong.
Reply:Manufactured homes used vinyl covered drywall type material in Kitchens and Baths. Painting vinyl is do-able, but honestly, I'd recommend an overlay. Although hard to find, there is such a thing as 1/4" GWB (drywall). If you can locate it, overlay the walls with the 1/4" drywall secured with drywall screws. Tape, spackle and finish the drywall, then paint (or finish) the drywall as you want. If this doesn't sound do-able, you could try one or two coats of water-based "Kilz" primer-sealer on the vinyl areas (don't use the oil base Kilz, it has a terrible odor), then follow this up with 2 coats of a good low-lustre satin paint (DO NOT use a flat paint in these areas).
Reply:Make sure the walls are clean by washing down with a product called TSP (sold at most paint stores Walmart might have it in paint dept.) Then use good latex primer , primer is worth the cost to avoid lots of headaches such as bleed thru . With primer one coat of paint will do.instead of several without primer. Primer can be tinted the color of the paint . Then use Latex eggshell or satin paint. I recently painted the interior of my house with exterior latex satin finish KILZ brand it was a one coat paint and the exterior paint is very durable and washable. KILZ cost 87.00 for a5 gallon at Walmart and I am very happy with the end result.
Reply:I helped my buddy paint his interior walls that were manufactured and we primed it with a Wagner Sprayer then we used the Wagner to Paint them. It was faster, cleaner, and saves a lot of paint($) if doing the whole house. So PRIME then PAINT!!

What is the latest floral specie discovered?

In California, an average of 10 plant species are discovered a year, said Andrew Sanders, curator at UCR's Herbarium. ( cit. ), so some new discoveries should have happened in the meantime.

But these two are the most actual I found:

Washington, Jan 17, 2008: Biologists have discovered a completely new species of palm tree in Madagascar, which dies soon after flowering.

http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/heal...

Wayne Armstrong / Special to The Press-Enterprise

The newly identified Brodiaea santarosae species is estimated to be about 5 million years old. ( November 19, 2007 )

http://www.pe.com/localnews/inland/stori...

What is the latest floral specie discovered?
The new species were found in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue, particularly in a zone called the Green corridor. The discovery comprises one species of snake, two species of butterflies, five species of orchids and three species of other plants.

Scientists are examining ten other species of plants, including four species of orchid, also believed to be newly discovered species.

The newly discovered snake species is a species of water snake, which lives along streams where it catches frogs and small animals as food. The snake has a nice white-yellow line along its head and red spots on its body. This species of snake can grow to 80cm long.

The new species of butterflies discovered in this province are among the eight new species of butterflies found here since 1996. Of the two new butterfly species, one is a brown butterfly species of Zela family and one is a new line of Satyrinae family.

Three of the five new species of orchid don’t have leaves and this is a very special characteristic for an orchid.

Other new species of plants are wild garlic species with flowers of nearly black colour, and an arum flower tree with yellow flowers

Yes. I like to go to the Yankee Candle shop and buy scented candles for the different seasons. I love the Yankee Candle shop!
Reply:I do. I use a citris in the summer months and go for either evergreen odors or fesh baked food odors in the winter. I use fresh laundry odors in the spring and go for natural scents in the fall. I always have done this. I use oils and candles and air freshener alot. I buy potpurie in the cooler months also.

I think i must of picked this habit up from my grandmother who always had a lovely scented home.

Reply:Yes it's a great way to celebrate the change of seasons. I love clean, fresh %26amp; floral in the spring, fruity ones in the summer, apples %26amp; spices in the fall and, of course, pine aromas in December.

I burn alot of candles. It just makes the house smell so good. And I burn only 100% soy candles. Your ceilings and walls don't collect nasty soot. They emit no unhealthy toxins and are safer to breathe than paraffin candles which are made from a petroleum by-product....which by the way furthers our dependence on foreign oil! Soy candles are made from soybeans grown by our own American farmers...made in the USA all the way!! You can find them online.

How to make a wedding floral cake topper?

I want to know how to my own wedding cake topper using calla lilies, for a three tier cake. Please help, thanks.

How to make a wedding floral cake topper?
You can find cake top floral containers at any cake supply store. They are usually white plastic with a well in them so that you can insert green floral foam and then then flowers stick into that. You might want to practice a few times before using artifical flowers to get the look that you want before using your real ones.

Good luck.
Reply:Most craft stores should have the base that you need. Sometimes the [silk] flowers are just laid on the cake. Depends on how fancy you want to get. Take a look here. This is a local shop. They make wonderful cakes as well.

http://www.sugarcraft.com/
Reply:You can buy a small cage like described in the first answer, or make life even easier and use the trick I do for some cakes. Take a small paper cup (about 2" in diameter) and trim it down to 1-2" high. Fill it with some wet floral foam (like oasis--go to a local florist and they should sell you a whole brick for less than a dollar). Soak the foam for atleast twenty minutes (an hour is better) cut the foam down with a regular kitchen knife and fill the cup so that there is about 1' of foam coming out of the top. Cover the foam/cup with greenery, but keep it pretty close to the base. You are trying to hide the entire cup with the greens. Then, insert your callas. If you are not used to arranging flowers I would suggest looking at a pic and trying to replicate it.

You can do just the topper, or place a few loose callas along the lower tiers. Remember if you have a limited number of flowerse that placing them in smaller groups has more effect than spreading them out everywhere, and that greenery can really dress it up alot. You may want to cover the base of the cake in it (slide several stems under the cake, or in the very base so that it looks like it is sitting on a bed of greens (leaves))/

Good Luck, and enjoy your wedding!
Reply:The easiest way is to simply place the flowers after the cake is made. If you are using real flowers, you need to place something underneath so the "juices" from the stems don't ruin the cake. For silk flowers, they can go straight on the cake. I made the cake for my sister's wedding last weekend and the top was decorated with silk flowers to mathc her bouquet. I actually inserted the stems into the cake so they wouldn't move.

I Paint foam (E-Z) masks with floral spray, how can I get finer detail for shadowing?

either an airbrush or soft masking. To soft mask cut the shape you want to spray out of paper, cardboard or acetate.Hold it above the piece and spray through it.(in other words make a stencil and hold it above the mask)

I would like to know, where I can buy floral handkerchiefs, in bulk, or large quantities, on the web?
Try checking ebay! There are always large lots of things available there for better prices. There is currently a listing for 250 Vintage Hankerchiefs ending in 3 days for $125 starting bid. The search below should take you to a whole list of items that might be what you want. Also, check Shopgoodwill.com, the on-line Goodwill Store -- they may have something as well. Also other auction sites. Good luck!

What is a good scent for a 50 year old woman? I like spicy, she likes more floral.?

Any suggestions for a good combo? At the store they all smell the same so I need some good ideas.

What is a good scent for a 50 year old woman? I like spicy, she likes more floral.?
There are a couple of really great scents out there now that mix spicy and floral and in my humble opinion, really match up with a more mature woman. Here are a few that I would recommend:

* Dior Addict - smells amazing! very provocative sent with hints of oriental aromas

* Lolita Lempicka - exotic licorice and vanilla combined with light greens, florals and musk

* Chanel Coco - fabulous. spicy and floral, with notes of amber.
Reply:Floral scents raise my libido. Cannot keep my hands off when the scent hits the fan!
Reply:my mom, who is in her mid 50s, likes Vera Wang (the original scent or Sheer Veil), Yves St. Laurent Paris, Cartier.

Cartier might be a good option. Not too floral, but not too spicey.

What accessories for a black lace ruffled choker halter with white pants with black floral embroidery on cuff?

We have a special event and wondering if you would go simple or something really dressy. Thanks.

What accessories for a black lace ruffled choker halter with white pants with black floral embroidery on cuff?
Something Silver or white gold.
Reply:Simple gold earrings and maybe one or two simple gold bracelets. Two much jewelry with ruffles and embroidery can make the whole look seem very busy.
Reply:keep it simple. much classier. less is more
Reply:I like silver hoop or silver threader earrings. :)

Time your auctions so they end in the evenings and weekends so you get more people seeing them as they are close to ending.

Am looking for Floral Wall paneling anyone know where to get it?

this is regular wall paneling, it is white/beige with small floral design.

Thanks

Am looking for Floral Wall paneling anyone know where to get it?
Home Depot, Lowes, Etc. It is in the panelling section, and usually has a vinyl covering that gives you the floral look. You can also try a Manufactured Home service/sales co. That is what used to be on the walls of older homes.
Reply:I don't rightly know of any off the top of my head but, I will give you some interesting advice, Get creative and purchase the color paneling you want and go to Wal-mart and get a floral paint roller. They'll have all the designs that you will need and you can make your own floral panels. In the long run, it will be cheaper for you.
Reply:If you are lookin for paintable embossed floral paneling, check out DesignYourWall.com. They have many types. see link below.

What are great locations for a floral shop? How can I actively get accounts for my flower shop ?

I assume they'll do well near hospitals, cemetaries, churches, greeting card/gift shops, and in places with lots of foot traffic.

Agree with first answer. Also I would say near fine dining areas, hotels, and in an area where there are a lot of professional type businesses.

Anyone know of any good websites to find beautiful wedding floral arrangements?

I'm not talking about weddingchannel.com or theknot.com. I'm looking for actual florist websites that have pictures of wedding centerpiece arrangements and a variety of bouquets. I've done google searches and haven't really found what I'm looking for. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Anyone know of any good websites to find beautiful wedding floral arrangements?
Check out this website. On the first page select which state you live in. After that, it will show a list of all florists in that state. After that simply click on any florist and their link to their official website is shown. Click on that and you will see each florists portfolio of pictures, arrangemetns and pricing.

Hope this helps.
Reply:This site has some examples:

Reply:most local florists you will be utilizing should have photo albums of items they've done. If they don't, I wouldn't bother with them. I actually "accidentally" ran across my bridal bouquet while flipping through a magazine on an airplane. The ad was not for bridal flowers it was for Swarovski Crystals (they had their crystals hanging from a bouquet). I ripped out the page and took it to my floral designer said "scrap my original request, make me this!" (of course I didn't have the Swarovski's but it turned out just exactly like the one I found (with "fake" crystals). Have fun!! Visit lots of area (within 90 mile or so radius) florist shops and spend some time looking at their photos.

The type of bouquet i'm looking for is an arm bouquet that would be wrapped in pretty tissue or celephane, that could be given to a little girl at a dance recital.

Anyone with cleaning tips to clean a silk floral wall-arch?

First, use canned air like the type sold at computer supply stores to clean keyboards. This will blow off loose dust and cobwebs. Then get a bottle of silk flower cleaner available at craft stores. My favorite is Botanical Science, Simply Silk, Silk Plant cleaner because there is no wiping, no rinsing, it is odorless and because it is an oil-free formulation, it will not attract dust after treatment.

Evenly saturate each leaf and flower until the solution literally runs off. You might want to do this outside with a tarp or drop cloth placed underneath the item to be cleaned. You'll see the dirt and grime drip off. Let it air dry.

Caution: You cannot use this product if you have already used an oil based cleaner. Some particularly filthy items may require a second application.

Anyone with cleaning tips to clean a silk floral wall-arch?
Try a fluffy duster the kind on a stick,if this doesn't work try a vaccum.
Reply:You local craft supply store (e.g., AC Moore or Michaels or equivalent depending on your location) sells an aerosol silk flower cleaner. Obviously remove it from the wall before cleaning.

To refinish oak cabinets. should I paint them brown or light green,I have floral paper beige flr yellow counte

Is there green in the wall paper? If there is then light green would be very cool and new. It is a light happy colour. If you go with the brown espresso it will be darker kitchen. The brown would be great if you have lots of light.

if you are wanting to bring more light into your kitchen and there is some green in the wallpaper I say do the green. Brown will make your kitchen look darker and give a cozy feel, but if it is a small space it will only make it look smaller. Also what is the theme thru the rest of your home? What other colors do you have

Dre and Ned both work for a botanical garden. The botanical garden is adding a number of floral designs around?

The botanical garden is adding a number of floral designs around its grounds. Dre, who has more experience, can plant the flowers and make the design by herself in 3 hours. it take Ned 5 hours working by himself to make the same design. If Dre and Ned are assigned to work together, how long will it take to make the design?

Dre and Ned both work for a botanical garden. The botanical garden is adding a number of floral designs around?
This is not really a question about botany at all, but rather a math problem that must be solved using rates. Dre plants at a rate of (1 design) / (3 hours) and Ned plants at a rate of (1 design) / (5 hours). If they work together, their combined rate is 1/3 + 1/5 = 8/15 = 0.5333 design/hr, so it takes 0.53 hours, which is 32 minutes.
Reply:The theoretical answer is around a half hour. But sometimes there is synergy and the more experience worker can tell the less experienced worker how to do his job more efficiently. Thus if there is synergy the job could be done a lot quicker.

However in some cases when two people are doing a job one of the worker may goof off and even sabotage the job causing the job to take longer.

Thus 8/15 of an hour is a rough approximation and the time required to finish the job may vary. Interestingly enough since they both did the job before they may with the experience may even finish the job faster than when they did the job previously. Thus not only is this question mathematical it is also philosophical and of practical experience.

Why do spicy (sometimes floral) scents cause headaches?

Alot of lotions and perfumes have spicy (sometimes floral) scents that cause me to have headaches after wearing it for a little while. Why is that? Not all scents do this to me, so is there someway to know before I purchase something and waste my money?

Why do spicy (sometimes floral) scents cause headaches?
Simply put you are allergic. :)

I only have two perfumes I can use because the strong fragrance make me get headaches and often migraines. Stay away from all strong smells because over time, it most likely will get worse.

At least from my experience.
Reply:IF you must have a perfume, you might try getting something natural from a healthfood store....no chemicals to react to. I still, however, react to most smells, natural or not. I started developing this prob as a teen and it has only worsened as I age.

or, you can go to a more expensive department store where they let you try before you buy and see how you react to them after having them on for a while.

What are the steps to put fresh flowers between layers on a tierred wedding cake? On a dish with floral foam?

Where can you get the dish from ? And how does this dish rest on the cake without destroying it ?

What are the steps to put fresh flowers between layers on a tierred wedding cake? On a dish with floral foam?
First, make sure that the flowers are completely clean. Most flowers that you buy are treated with pesticides. You don't want your guests eating that with their cake ;) Second, there are many ways to place flowers on a tiered cake.

*Cut the stems short and lay them on top of the tier around the outside.

*Stick the stems, cut short, into the icing creating a pattern around the cake. You will want to use thin stemmed flowers, such as daisies or orchids, so they don't weigh down and pull on the cake.

*Cut a circle out of wax paper. Use a small piece of Oasis floral foam and arrange the flowers in the foam. Place the oasis on the top of the wax paper in between the layers of the cake.

Best Wishes!
